Appraisal

An Appraisal scheme is designed to provide a systematic framework for regular discussion about work performance, agreeing objectives for the months ahead and identifying any training required by the employee to enable them to meet their own and the Company’s needs.  The responsibility for making sure that performance is reviewed is shared equally between the individual and their line manager.

There needs to be a review of employee’s performance against set objectives at the formal appraisal review and continuously throughout the business year.  As well as providing feedback on performance, these reviews should re-visit objectives to ensure continued relevance to organisational objectives.

The appraisal process should look to include some or all of the following elements:

  • description of employees’ key responsibilities
  • performance assessment against objectives for the previous business year
  • performance assessment against set criteria
  • performance rating against objectives for the prior year
  • performance objectives for the new business year
  • development plan
  • employee’s comments
  • reviewing Manager’s comments

The process is vital to ensure that employees know what is expected of them and how they are doing. The discussions help to identify training and development needs as well as assisting in career planning.
